Stephen Amberg was awarded the Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987. His areas of research are in comparative labor, employment and social policy, American state development, social learning processes, and Pragmatist action theory.

He has taught at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Simmons College, the New School, and the Copenhagen Business School.

Amberg became Professor Emeritus in 2024.
